15mm WWII British Airborne - Temperate

 All,

As mentioned in my previous post, I haven't been gaming, but I sure as heck have been painting and basing, and Joe Legan bullied me into proving I've actually been productive, so here we go with some blog posts (finally).

Next up we have my Red Devils based in a temperate scheme for Normandy and Market Garden.  I have completed another Red Devils force for urban fighting (Market Garden), which you'll see soon, and I'm working on a third force based for the desert (Tunisia and Sicily).  Yes, I seem to have gone a bit overboard, but I've definitely jumped into 15mm with both feet...

Regarding this force, I painted very little of it.  I may have painted a couple command stands and the flamethrower stand, but pretty much everything else was bought, and I simply had to base it.  The four 6-pdr ATGs were from a gentleman on Ebay, while most of the force was bought painted from Gajo Minis.

Here it is, the entire force, comprised of:
-A Commanding Officer stand
-An Executive Officer (XO, or 2iC) stand
-Five rifle platoons (three sections, a Platoon Commander -PC-, and a PIAT)
-An MG Platoon of four Vickers MGs and a PC
-A light ATG Platoon (four 6-pdr guns and a PC)
-A heavy ATG Platoon (two 17-pdr guns and a PC)
-An Artillery Platoon (two 75mm pack howitzers and a PC)
-A Mortar Platoon (three 3" tubes and a PC)
-I also have two 2" mortars and a flamethrower team thrown in

Another look.

The command stand.  The standing troops are from Gajo Minis and are the new Battlefront plastics, while the jeep was actually from another gentleman on Ebay and is the old Battlefront metals.

Another look.  Pretty sexy ;)

The XO stand, Battlefront metals from a gentleman on Ebay (the same one that did the jeep, above).

Reverse.

Some rifle platoon command stands, Battlefront plastics from Gajo Minis.

A closeup.

Another.

And one more.

Some PIAT stands.  When you buy the Battlefront plastic rifle company you get plenty of PIATs, but only two 2" mortars...

A closeup.

Another.

Some rifle stands, very handsome.  I know it's a bit apocryphal in combat, but I can never get enough red berets ;)

A closeup.

Another.

Again.

The Vickers MG Platoon, with PC.

A closeup.

Again.

The 6-pdr ATG platoon.

These are Battlefront metals, very nice.

Again.

The 17-pdr ATG platoon.

These are Battlefront plastics from Gajo Minis, very nice as well!

Again.

The howitzer platoon, with PC.

These are the old Battlefront metals, from a gentleman on Ebay.

Again.  He did a really great job, I just had to base them.

The 3" Mortar Platoon with PC, Battlefront plastics from Gajo Minis.  Which is a bit of a misnomer, I didn't purchase the Mortar Platoon from Gajo Minis, I just had some extra tubes lying around and 'stole' figures from the rifle company and ATG crews to fill them out.

A close up.  Note the standing crewman with an anti-tank round, standing in as a mortar crewman.

Another closeup.

The two 2" mortar teams, nicely done, wish I had three more of them...

The flamethrower team, which is actually from Plastic Soldier Company and painted by yours truly.  Nice figures, but noticeably smaller than the Battlefront figures, particularly the new plastics.

Reverse.

And there you go, my Red Devils, all set to jump into action.  Been in love with these guys since I was a kid, from "The Longest Day" and "A Bridge Too Far," of course.  Can't wait to get up to some mischief with them.

More to follow!

V/R,
Jack

  1. Great work on these. The DPM camo looks very well - amazing at this scale.

    1. I appreciate it Darrin! It's not bad, I think the other set of Brit paras (which I'll post in the next week) came out even better, but I'll let you be the judge ;)

  3. Really good looking figures. I cannot wait to see them in action. I have some 20mm red devils I acquired painted back in 2012. I keep meaning to get them out and play but haven't. It will be soon though. I have begun looking over the Britton Publishers Battle of Arnhem scenario books, ready to do them when (when!) I finish the Operation Jupiter scenarios.

    1. Shaun,

They are pretty sexy, aren't they? I have another set to show you soon, and I think they look even better! ;) Awesome, I cannot wait to see you get some British Paras on the table! I have the Arnhem scenario book as well; hell, I've got a whole boatload of the Britton Publishers scenario books. They've all got some good stuff, but, in my opinion, none of them are as good as the Operation Jupiter book.
