Quick Update on Modern 6mm and 20mm Stuff

All,

No time for gaming last weekend, but I did get some stuff processed and get some painting done, and here is the visual record of the goings on.  First up, I've commented quite a few times about how I'm beginning to feel like a Third-World Dictator (due to my recent megalomania in 6mm).  I also commented around the yard that 1) I was contemplating a major purchase, and then 2) I made said purchase, and all I can say is now I definitely qualify as a dictator, only waiting on a suitable nation state to allow me demonstrate my special brand of dominating benevolence.  So I decided I'd document the whole thing in pictures.

The whole mess, modern 6mm, all GHQ and CinC.  If you're not familiar, I have a whole bunch of Warsaw Pact, which I've broken into 'green' and 'khaki' forces, then I have NATO forces,   I don't have an exact count, but it's something along the lines of:
Warsaw Pact MBT: ~240
Warsaw Pact AFV: ~230
Warsaw Pact Arty: ~36
Warsaw Pact Air Defense: ~25
Warsaw Pact Recon: ~30
Warsaw Pact Engineers: ~30
NATO MBT: ~120
NATO AFV: ~115
NATO Arty: ~10
NATO Air Defense: ~12
NATO Recon: ~25
NATO Engineers: ~12
Various other crap, trucks, ammo carriers, jeeps, etc...

I also have a number of aircraft:
-CH-47
-2 x UH-1 Hog
-2 x OH-6
-2 x AH-1 (but they're pretty jacked up and I'm not sure if I can salvage either of them)
-3 x AH-64 (again, pretty jacked up, maybe can get one out of them)
-1 x A-10
-2 x F-18
-2 x A6
-1 x EA6B
-2 x MiG-23/27
-4 x Mi24D
-1 x Mi24A
-4 x Allouette

I figured it at about $3k in raw lead; I bought about 85% of it second-hand, so I've spent about $900 on all of it.  I'm going to have to get really creative with rules and basing, as I'm realizing I actually have too much ;)  No seriously, I'm looking at multi-basing my stuff, i.e., putting three tanks on a base for armor, and three AFVs and some infantry on a base for mechanized infantry.  Even then I don't know if I can get all this stuff on the table.

What really makes me mad is that I have a tremendous amount of infantry already painted and based on pennies, and that's not how I'll be playing with these, so I'm not sure what to do with them.  I really don't want to pull them off the pennies and stick them on new bases, and I don't really want to sell them off.  We'll see what happens.

So, this is what you've already seen,  my 'green' and 'khaki' Warsaw Pact forces.  These are pretty  much the only vehicles 100% finished that i can throw on the table right now.  I say only, but it's about 300 vehicles of all sorts.

Here's a look at a bunch of the stuff I just bought.  At left (in rows) is WarPac stuff, T-62s, T-72s, and BMP-1s.  In the center on sticks is a bit more WarPac stuff, and the rest is a whole lot of NATO stuff, with about 30 Chieftains, another 20 or so M-60s, 5 M-1s, 10 Bradleys, a whole bunch of (every type of variant) of FV-432, some M-113s, etc...

Closer look at the left side of the box.

And the right.

My box of aircraft.  Just realized the AH-1s and AH-64s aren't in there...

This is all new stuff.  A few T-72s and T-62s, a whole bunch of T-55s and BMP-1s, plus other cats and dogs.

This is all my US Vietnam infantry, based on pennies.  I have no problem using them for more modern stuff, it's just now they're not based properly for what I want to do...

All my North Vietnamese infantry.

A bunch of unprepped infantry, either still in box. lying loose, or on sticks for painting.

Bunch of modern German (Leo IIs and Marders) and modern Brit (Challengers and Warriors).

A bunch of (mostly) US stuff; a few Abrams, a few Bradleys, and a boatload of M-113s of various stripes, plus some other cats and dogs (LAVs, armored recon cars, few M-60s).

A bunch of modern infantry; modern stuff based on pennies at right, stuff that needs to be sorted at left.

And then my other project: I'm still slowly plugging away on my modern 20mm stuff that I got from Elhiem.  Fantastic miniatures that paint up pretty easily.  I finished off (minus basing, which I've yet to give serious consideration to) a team of four US modern shooters, and a squad of seven Russian/Eastern European troops.

All the guys I finished, US Direct Action-types at top, two sticks of Russian troops at bottom.

US troops up first: I kept it pretty basic, just a plain green flightsuit with tan gear over it, yellow helmet, and black rifles.

Again.

Other side.

One more time.

Now for some Russians.  I put some fantastic camoflage on them, but I keep putting a wash on the troops, which I think works well, but it kind of drowns out the camo.  In the future I'll probably keep this in mind and keep the uniforms more simple.  Or at least I should, but I probably won't.  As it is, you can't really see the camo, even in real life, much less in the pictures.  But I spent a lot of time on it, and it looked great I tell ya!

Again.

Other side.

Walking away.

The other stick, with a Dragunov, an AK, and a PK machine gun.

Again.

Reverse.

And going away.

Now that I've got enough of these guys painted up to actually have a small skirmish fight, I need to think about 1) basing (maybe put them on quarters?), and 2) terrain, so they have something to hang out on that looks more appropriate than the kitchen counter...

In any case, I've got a three-day weekend, so I'll look to put in some serious mileage on my Poland campaign.  Stay tuned folks, there's always something going on here ;)

V/R,
Jack

  1. That's a lot of 6mm gear to work with, they'll keep you busy for a while. Your 20mm figures look great. I'm painting some Elhiem USMC figures at the moment in desert camo and following several recommendations I'm using a tan earth base, heavily dry brushed Iraqi sand and lightly dry brushed deck tan, then washed with a deep brown ink - the final effect compares well with photos of marines taken from more than a few yards, so works for me on the table top. Saves hour of stippling the camo patterns and looks cool.

Enjoy the long weekend. Cheers, Andy

    1. Andy,

Yeah, the 6mm stuff will probably see me dead at some point, hopefully not before I've gotten a game in!

Thanks for the compliments on the 20mm stuff, I like painting it up, but it's so big (I'm mostly a 10mm guy)! It will work great for skirmish gaming though. Good luck with the Desert MARPAT, I don't think I'll ever try it. Lord knows I couldn't even get it to work in 10mm, with a khaki paintjob being about as good as I could do.

For a look at me sporting Desert MARPAT about ten years ago, look for the "For My Buddies" post here on the blog.

    2. Hi Jack

Thanks for the reminder about your photos. I saw them last year. It looks as if my painting of the desert MARPAT uniform is working out well, but the body armour seems much more khaki coloured than the much browner colours I've seen people use on the internet.

You seem to have had an "interesting" few years, I guess Fallujah was pretty intense. Never served myself, I wanted to join the RAF back in the 70's but my dad (RAF '42-47) talked me out of it, so I became a geologist. Done quite a bit of travel, but thankfully no one ever took a shot at me, except in Venezuela. Came close to getting run over by a stolen car near the Galleria in Houston (LoL).

Good luck with the painting/gaming, I'm enjoying the KG Klink reports by the way.

      Cheers, Andy

    3. Andy,

Regarding serving, I'm a bit of a geologist myself: met plenty of 'rocks' in the Marine Corps ;) As for getting shot at, nothing better than your man Winston on that one:

"Nothing in life is so exhilarating as to be shot at without result."
Though I will say it can get a little old after awhile ;)

Where can I find pics of your MARPAT, I'd love to take a look. And I'm glad you're liking the KG Klink reports, they've been a lot of fun.

    4. Hi Jack

Pics of my first try-out for Elheim's 20mm marines.

And a quote from George Orwell

"People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf."

      Hope you like the figures.

    5. Andy,

Damn, man, I wish I hadn't asked, your troops look much better than mine, and the effect for the MARPAT looks fantastic!

Brilliant blog by the way; I'd seen it previously when looking around for Cold War Commander batreps but hadn't saved it; I'm now an official follower.

  2. For your 6mm infantry already based on pennies you could try using sabot bases, either making your own or buying ones made in MDF.

    1. Ashley,

I went to the Warbases website and was about to send them a query, along the lines of "can I get regiment-style movement trays tha thold pennies, either 4, 5, or 6 per, 2mm MDF as close to 60mm x 40mm," when I realized it's not going to work. See, the plan is to base the infantry with their vehicles, and if I put them on a 60 x 40 base on pennies I don't think I'm going to get 3 AFVs on there as well, but I can get vehicles and infantry on a 60 x 40 if the infantry aren't on bases.

I suppose I could get a few for those not requiring vehicles, i.e., straight 'leg' infantry, airmobile, and paratroops.

      Thanks for the suggestion.

  3. Jack,

For a 10mm diehard, you certainly have a lot of 6mm. Now all you need to do is build that 20mm collection up to be that same size as the 6mm, and you will be a true convert. Actually, you have so much 6mm, I think you can replicate several entire forces for actual nation-stats!

    1. Shaun,

      Calm down, I'm still a 10mm guy :)

I'm really not sure what happened with the 6mm. I guess it's the classic wargamer 'ooooooh, shiny.' I have all this modern WarPac stuff in 10mm, but found myself staring at GHQ's website, then making a 'small' purchase of Soviet and Afghan 6mm stuff.

Then I started reading about the Lock'N'Load boardgame and wanted some more 6mm stuff, and then people kept offering up more and more on TMP and Ebay, and I just kept buying. And now, as you said, I have more tanks than some real-world countries. It wasn't the plan...

I've got a bunch of 20mm WWII stuff (Brits, Yanks, and Germans from Valiant, with PSC vehicles that don't match very well) languishing on the shelf, will get around to painting them someday.

      Take care man.

      Jack
