WWII Eastern Front Mini-Campaign Games 5-7

 All,

Carrying on from where I last left you, the little guy and I continue our campaign using the modified One Hour Skirmish Wargame Rules.

Game 5

We decide the last fight was essentially a stalemate, so we stick on the same map.

The Reds set up on their side of the river.

The Soviet right.
And we're off, the Germans pushing up onto the bridge, looking to bum-rush the town.

Their panzers following.
And, well supported by tanks and artillery, they succeed in driving the Commies out!

I'm getting my butt kicked...  Germans in the town (left) and across the river (top right) are decimating the Reds in their starting positions...

The Germans push more troops across the river.

But German artillery catches them in their exposed positions (both in the town and on the bridge)!

And the Soviets push across the river on the right.

Casualty draws are not kind to the Germans all but one of their units are destroyed, forcing them to fail morale and depart the battlefield, win to the Russkies.

Game 6

A look at our map for fight number 6.  This fight was, for me, the craziest one, and most evocative of the Eastern Front meatgrinder, just masses of men and material being tossed into the maelstrom and being devoured by it.  Lots of fun ;)

Ze Cherman force, with 4 units of infantry, 1 MG, 1 Mortar, and 1 ATG.

Facing the Reds, with 4 x Infantry, 1 more Infantry units as Tank Riders, 1 MG, and 1 Katyusha.  Oh, and 2 units of T-34s.

The initial setup, with Reds allowed to set up all the way to the river, Germans anywhere on the other side.

A look at the German defenses.

And the Soviets, chomping at the bit.

Just look at those filthy animals.

And their off!  Artillery pounds the town and a Soviet tank-infantry team pushes straight into it, whilst the other plunges into the frigid waters of the swift-flowing river.  Infantry shout 'urrah!' and follow.

The fighting in the town is absolute hell on earth!

The Germans throw in everything they've got, killing the Soviet tanks and pummeling the tank riders, as Red infantry pushes onto the bridge.

And into the fight!

The Soviet tank-infantry team that crossed the river slams into the German defenders in town, with more Red infantry coming up (far right).

And the Soviets have secured the town!

A last ditch counterattack by nearby German grenadiers is easily repulsed, ending the game.

Game 7

The map for Game 7.

The Germans have four units of infantry, one MG, one Panzer III, and one arty.

The Russkies have four infantry, 1 MG, 1 Mortar, one unit of T-34s with Tank Riders, one unit of Katyushas, and one unit of 122mm howitzers.  Should be easy, right?

Initial dispositions.

The Red horde, poised to strike, looking to push infantry across the river and into cover while utilizing supporting arty/rockets to suppress German defenses, then push for breakthrough with their tank-infantry team.

The German defenders.

The Red infantry pushes across the river without much help from the arty...

The Germans launch their panzers into the fray, as their infantry in the town succumb to heavy arty/rocket bombardment.  Having said that, as soon as the Soviet tank-infantry team (top right) broke cover it was promptly eliminated by German arty...

Things get hot in the north.  The German panzers easily mow down the Soviet infantry coming out of the river...

While in the south, German defenders break cover to close assault Soviet infantry emerging from the river!

The two sides stare at each other across the river, too exhausted to do anything.

And that is how our campaign ended, a total of seven games, and quite closely followed what happened in real life, where the German counteroffensive eventually ran out of steam but held the Soviets at bay, essentially amounting to a spoiling attack.

More on the way.

V/R,
Jack
