American Heavy Metal

All,

Tonight I slapped together all the American vehicles from my Pendraken Cold War project.  Here are some pics.  I'm hoping to get the Soviets slapped together tomorrow night and the infantry taken care of Thursday.  Then I need some warm weather (it's @#$%ing 13 degrees here in Texas right now, ridiculous!!!) so I can get them spray primed.  I apologize, it's tough to see detail in the photos since these are bare metal, but I wanted to share.

The whole mess: a tank company, a mechanized infantry company, a recon platoon, a heavy mortar platoon, a tank destroyer platoon, and a HQ element of a Deuce and a Half and an M-42 Duster AA vehicle.

A closeup of a tank platoon and the tank company commander.  I added a tank commander to show the platoon commanders, and I added a tank commander and removed the MG turret to show the company commander.  At bottom right is the recon platoon of four M151 jeeps.

One of the Mech Platoons and the Mech Company Commander.  Again I added a vehicle commander figure to denote the platoon commander, and I bought an ACAV, but didn't add the side M-60s, to use as the company commander.

The four-jeep recon platoon.  At bottom right you can see I used one of the ACAV's crew figures in the back of the jeep to denote the platoon commander.

Bottom left is the heavy mortar (106mm) platoon, above them is the tank destroyer platoon, and at bottom right is the deuce and a half and Duster.

A side view of the mortars (left) and the tank destroyers, with tank crew figure (top right) to denote the platoon commander.  If you're wondering what the hell my tank destroyers are, they're M-113s that I glued 90mm recoiless rifles to (actually, 75mm French recoiless rifles from Pendraken's Indochina range).

In any case, that's the US vehicles, need to get the Soviets done, and they will match up with the Americans:
-Tank Company in T-62s
-Mech Infantry Company in BTR-50s
-Recon Platoon in BTR-152s
-Heavy Mortar Platoon (3 x 120mm mortars transported by trucks)
-Tank Destroyer Platoon (ISU-152s)
-HQ element with truck and towed AAA

V/R,
Jack

  3. Nice, that is a lot of heavy metal :)

"and I added a tank commander and removed the MG turret to show the company commander."

Is that just a handy visual reminder, or did Company Commanders not have the cupola fitted in real life?

    1. TP,

I don’t know if that’s real or not, probably not, just wanted a visual difference to annotate the company commander.

  4. Whew! I thought I was the only one who used a cutting board for hobby stuff. Looking good Jack. Can't wait to see all this heavy metal on the table.

    1. Steve,

I’m going early, probably mid-60s, and this ain’t happening in Europe... The damn Soviets have managed to pull off a full-on invasion of the United States, Red Dawn style!!!

So we’ll not be fighting in the Fulda Gap or to cross the Rhine, we’re fighting to save Kentucky (I know, who would want to save Kentucky?) or to cross the Mississippi!!! The Soviets will be coming down through Canada in Washington and New York, up through Mexico in Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona, and have nuked California and DC! I’ll be running a mechanized fire brigade dashing from enemy breakthrough to enemy breakthrough while the boy commands the (evil) Red horde!

  6. Dig the M113's with RCL's...a lot like the ones the ARVN used.

    1. Yeah, I wish Pendraken had the long, 106mm recoiless rifles, but having to make do with the 75mm weapons.

  7. Nice. Like the command mods and the AT mods. Very cool. Are you going to have a stand with a "not Patrick Swayze" and squad of Wolverines?

    Cheers, Andy

    1. Hey Andy, thanks man! If I do Swayze, I'll do it in 15mm skirmish. We'll see what happens. At this point, I'm rolling with the idea of everyone volunteering/being pressed into service, so no time for guerillas.
