Anybody Read Wargames Illustrated?

All,

Took the kiddos to the bookstore last night and picked up issue #377, March 2019.  I’ve bought maybe one or two others before.  Anyway, I’m flipping through and get to page 61;

top right corner.

I’m thinking, ‘man, those look familiar.’  And they are!  They’re from my blog!

Pretty damn cool to have my stuff in a magazine, I just wish they’d have let me know (how crazy is it that I chose to buy the one my stuff is in, or have they been doing it for awhile? Doubtful...), and it would have been kinda cool if they actually credited me for the photos.

V/R,
Jack

  1. Wow! Well, it is kind of a compliment that they chose your stuff - and very well deserved, even though I thought that they would ask.

    1. John,

Hey buddy, hope all is well! I've been super busy, but working on getting back to normal, in terms of wargaming, at least ;)

I didn't mind them using the pics, don't even really even need to ask, just wish they'd have said "these are Just Jack's photos," or "these are from the Blackhawkhet blog," or something along those lines, would have been pretty cool.

I see I've got some catch-up reading to do on your blog, particularly the "29th Let's Go!" campaign, looks cool.

      V/R,
      Jack

    1. Hey man, yeah, I'm still alive, just a lot going on. The past couple weeks I've been doing what I can to get myself back to gaming, any minute now ;)

      You about done training?

    2. Finally made it down to Pensacola. Just waiting to class up and should be all set!

    3. Gotcha. So through basic officer's training and now into MOS training I guess? Good luck, you're getting there, but then you'll be hitting the Fleet, no time, much less space, for gaming on ship!

      V/R,
      Jack

  4. They are breaching your intellectual property rights, you should ask for a years free subscription. ;)

    1. ^ this. A 'proper' magazine should know and do better.

      Cheers,

      Pete.

    2. Pete is right. I don't know what the copyright situation is on a blog that doesn't have a statement, but at the end of the day simple common decency indicates that they should ask if they're going to use photos commercially.

(I have a creative commons on my Flickr pictures that allows that; you can use my pictures how you want, so long as you (i) ask and (ii) credit.)

    3. Yeah Jack. I second these points.

    4. Jacko - Now that's not a bad idea, that way I can peruse each issue for my stuff ;)

Pete, Kaptain, and Duc - Sure, but I really don't mind them using it, just thinking how cool it would have been if it referenced my blog.

      Jack

    5. Well, the fact you painted them and do not get credit for is slack on their part (The Magazine and\or Author), especially considering this magazine has been around for a very long time.

Blog's don't need copyright statements, the picture is Jack's, the paint job is Jack's artistic content. of course, it is a "storm in a teacup" but the magazine may have forgotten the the Gentlemanly Rules of Wargaming :) Cheers

  5. Hi Jack,

That's cool bit also a bit cheeky of them to do that without giving you at least an email to say please.

  6. That is not right in my playbook! They should have at least cited your URL or blog name for credit.

    1. Not to pile on, but I was a managing editor of a magazine in a former life: completely shoddy of them to pull images without attribution. I would even go one further and say that since they were on your blog, it would have been easy for them to reach you for simple notification. I hardly think WI is up against deadline like a daily paper: they had time to do this right.

  7. Hey Jack,

Great that your work is featured in the mag, but I agree with the previous comments - they've used your intellectual property, without crediting you as the origin of the work. That's really poor of the editorial team at WI and they should be ashamed. As you say, it would have been really neat if they had simply credited you as the painter/origin of the work, but they should still have asked first. Still, great to see your work in print! Well done.

    Cheers, Andy

  8. It seems to me you could ask them to, at the very least, add a note in their next issue crediting you with the pictures, that they neglected to clear this with you beforehand, and that they regret the error.

You could also ask that they refund the money you spent on the issue, or extend credit for the next one.

After all, imagine what they would do if someone were to use material from their magazine without attribution!

    Just a thought...

    Best regards,

    Chris Johnson

  9. Hi Jack,

I'm the Sub Editor at Wargames Illustrated. We'd like to apologise for using your image without permission. We've now investigated the matter and discovered where we went wrong. It was, as they say, a 'bit of a cock up'.

By way of compensation, we'd be more than happy to offer you a free, one year membership to our Prime content. This provides you with not only a PDF copy of the latest magazine every month but also access to Primetime, our weekly review service, which also includes video interviews with many industry luminaries. In addition, you can also search The Vault, a downloadable archive of every issue of the magazine since issue 1.

Please get in touch on letters@wargamesillustrated.net with a suitable email address and we can get that set up.

    Once again, our sincere apologies.

    Wayne

    3. Hi Wayne,

I hope all is well, and thanks for posting here. First, I'd like to publicly thank my buddy Colin (AKA "cmnash") for sending the email; I've been pretty busy the past couple days and really hadn't given it much thought. Second, I want to publicly thank you for looking into the issue, taking the time to reply, and for the very generous offer. Lastly, thanks to all my fellow wargamers for their support.

The whole picture thing is really no big deal, I was just lamenting the fact I've got two boys interested in wargaming and it would have been really cool to show off a bit for them ;)

In any case, I'm incredibly flattered that any of my minis would be deemed good enough to grace your pages, and I'll email you shortly.

      V/R,
      Jack
