A Painting Update

All,

After last weekend's painting fest, I've been able to get some more stuff done.  In this edition, I grassed the 15mm Aussies and Italians and the 10mm FFL project troops, I completed all my jungle and village stuff from Flashpoint Minis, I got some more 10mm Modern troops prepped, and I'd like to introduce some fine looking 3D prints from Butlers Printed Models.  Oh, and I bought some more read-painted terrain from Battlefront!

The Italians (left) and the Aussies (right) from Battlefront, now with grass.

The Aussies.

Their mustachioed, Tommy-Gun carrying Platoon Sergeant.

A couple Section Leaders.

And Leftenant Paul Hogan.

Captain Corelli's Mandolin-loving Italians for North Africa and Sicily.

Again.

And one more.

And then I grassed all the 10mm Modern troops I'd finished up the other day.

Left to right is Israelis, Insurgents, and French SOF.

Some more.  I think the grass really livens things up a bit.

The French line infantry and Arab civilians.

Side shot of the whole mess.

Close up of French weapons and rifle stands.

More of the same.

And let's get to those 10mm Butlers Printed models: truly fantastic!!!  I went in for four HMMWVs, two with Ma Deuce, one with TOW, and one with Mk19.  The TOW is actually from Minifigs Modern US, as is the figure in the cupola for one of the .50-cal gun trucks.

A .50-cal gun truck with Minifigs dude.

The TOW truck.

The Mk19 automatic grenade launcher gun truck.

And the other HMG truck.

Some more BPM heavy metal (or light plastic, as it were): a pair of LAV-25s, and, with all this talk of NATO, I went in for some old fashioned panzertruppen.  I almost painted them some camo-scheme based on dunkelgelb, but figured that could have folks coming out of the woodwork to accuse me of being a closet Nazi, so I went with a simple olive drab.  I'm only sort of joking; such is the state of affairs on some 'wargaming' forums.  Anyway, I digress, and I apologize, from here on out, let's stick purely to wargaming.

The LAVs.

The Marder IFVs (with hand-painted crosses, no less!).

And a Leopard II, one of my favorite tanks, based purely on aesthetics.  And not the (relatively) new, redesigned, Transformers-looking monstrosity, but this one, this model, whichever one it is.

And let's get some Russkies: a ZSU-23-4 and a BRDM scout car, primed medium green and heavily dry-brushed.

Again.

Sorry, not sure why these pics are in here.  Did I not finish them last time?  Last time may been simply finished painting, but not washed.  I dunno…

The Technicals.

I finished all my jungle stuff from Jimmi at Flashpoint Minis!  Absolutely loving the bamboo!

Closer look.

Another.

Again.

More?

Yes, more.  A closeup of the flocking I put on the tree and bamboo bases.  Not beautiful, but passes muster in my book.

All the jungle village stuff I have.  Everything is from Flashpoint Minis, except the goat, that's from Kyote.

You can see the huts I just did (on right) are a bit darker than the ones I did previously.

A look at the two new shrines.

And the original (bottom left, next to the well, with the other two at top/top right).

The old stuff.

All the rest of my jungle trees.  The darker green is all from Flashpoint, the bright green is cheap trees off of Ebay.

This shows how they mix in color with the stuff I just bought.

Again.

I prepped some more 10mm Modern troops.  Need to sand them, prime them, paint them, wash them, and grass them.  But then they're ready ;)  Put the Peter Pig US Marines on pennies, need to grass them.  Put Jimmi's Montagnards on popsicle sticks.  Still have the hotel and train station to paint.  Also found some roadblocks that are primed and ready for paint (bottom center).

A closer look.

Oh, and I forgot something (right)!!!

Some more 10mm from Butlers Printed Models: two Land Rovers, two Scimitars, two FV432s, and a Chieftain.

The new stuff from Battlefront.  I ordered their craters and their 'shattered battlefield.'  This is really awesome, stuff I badly need, and I didn't have to do any work!!!!

The craters.

The shattered battlefield, with four bases of craters/tree stumps.

And four bases of water-filled craters.  Awesome!!!

Well, thanks for looking, and I'm stoked for some games this weekend.  Just gotta figure out what those will be...

V/R,
Jack

  1. Captain Corelli's Mandolin!!! Love it! Good looking troops, Jack.

Wow some wacko bird folks out there had an issue with correct nomenclature for paint colors? Isnt that part of the fun?

    1. Thanks buddy. No, not about colors per se, just the idea that having some German wargaming stuff makes you a closet Nazi. Yeah, there be fruit loops out there...

  2. Truly, you are a machine. You must be working night shifts as well as days.

Lovely stuff. The jungle terrain looks great. BPM kit is superb, just the wheels on the Landys needed a bit of work on mine.

    1. Andy,

Thanks man, and I've definitely been putting in a lot of work. I'm glad I don't live in the UK, close enough to stop by BPM, all my pay would be going there!

  3. As always - beautifully painted!
As for the 3d print miniatures - those who printed them decided to save time did not particularly bother with print quality. model of the same author, I printed with the same quality only on the sample (to have an idea of what's what)

    1. Thanks, I appreciate it. I don't mind the minor striations, in 10mm they're hardly noticeable, though I'm not sure how bad they might get with larger scales.

    2. Hmmm! I'm looking at the excellent work with the figures of soldiers forget about the scale))))

  5. Looks fantastic!

With all these hot and sweltering climates, at some point you're going to need to do a Winter War or Cold War Norway campaign :-)

    1. Hey man, thanks, and how the heck have you been? You’ve been awful quiet around here lately, was wondering if you were still alive!

I’m working on winter stuff, both WWII and modern. The hardest part is coming up with terrain...

What have you been up to?

    2. Deep in fantasy land for the most part with Lord of the Rings stuff and some RPG campaigns.

Feeling the urge to get back to Normandy and 1944 though. Re-purchased a copy of Face of Battle though I think it's a bit too heavy for the kid yet.

    3. LOTR always sounds cool, but then there’s two problems for me: I can’t afford (time or money) to do two giant armies for massed battles (see my Napoleonic projects), and I can’t figure a way to make skirmish gaming fun with guys that can’t lose (see my Sgt Rock project).

Normandy sounds cool, I’m reading a book on Operation Epsom right now, and I can’t say I’m familiar with Face of Battle. I remember spending time on their website, but never did play it, can’t remember why now.

    4. Grab one of the old GW LOTR books for a couple bucks off ebay or noble knight and give it a shot. The scenarios are a lot of fun to work through and don't require any big stack of models.
The kid prefers playing the orcs :)

Face of battle is very old school: D100 rolls, lots of modifiers, tables to look up.
Its cool but it's definitely a "Lets just play this for a while, so we can figure it all out".
A lot of color though and the guy I got it from threw in the Commonwealth expansion for free.

    5. I might have to do that for LOTR; are you doing it in 15mm?

Face of Battle sounds like too much thinking for me, then ;)

I did just pick up Disposable Heroes II, some very interesting scenario concepts, haven’t played it yet though. Got Combat Patrol, played six or so games so far, it’s kinda nifty.

Don’t worry, 5Core is still my go-to, and I promise you that all hell is about to break loose on Cuba Libre with some 5Core Company Command. I’m re-invading South Leon and gonna do a modern knock-off of Marker-Garden in Cronistria. It’s gonna be fast and furious, like the War of Liberation.

    6. Actually breaking tradition and doing 25ish mm for LOTR. Mirlton figures mostly along with some of the GW figures a friend gave me.
I kinda do wish I had done 15, so I could get a mob of orcs cheaper but whatcha gonna do?

I always wanted to try out Disposable Heroes but it was one of those I never quite got around to.
      Anything to recommend it?

I feel like at some point, you could publish your own "Jack's world" alternate history campaign guide :-)

    7. 25mm??? Despicable! I’ll tell ya, I tried painting some 28mm once, and I did not like it. Too much work because of all the surface area, plus I’m not that talented a painter, just block and wash, no highlights or dry-brushing, it’s all too much work! I wonder if I could pull it off in 10mm? There’s no way I’ll have a good time painting orcs...

The original DH was quite conventional; the second iteration has really gone for a whole new game. Even so, it’s not as much the gameplay as the scenario concept, which is (in my opinion) very innovative: it’s a platoon-level game. They want realistic distances/ranges so you play on 6’ x 4’, the attacker has two squads in table and one off in reserve, the defender has one and one. It’s possible to have a supporting MG or mortar, but it’s most likely off-table (and thus untouchable, backing up the realistic range concept).

The activation concept is nifty, but nothing too crazy (hard to do new stuff anymore!), and combat is very much about suppression and close assault. If you shot and suppressed someone, they’re now hugging the dirt and it is literally impossible to hit them in the rules, you have to close assault. I like it ;)

Publishing “Jack’s World”? I do! Blackhawkhet, Cuba Libre, Island Hopping, Sword of Gideon, and Hakuna-Matara! If ya can’t keep up, take notes! Besides, you’re the author in the family :)

      V/R,
      Jack

    8. You could probably get a lot of mileage with orcs from just green and brown block colors and then wash the heck out of them to muddy them up.

And huh, DH2 sounds pretty interesting actually. Will definitely add it to the list.
